Pulsed-field Gel Electrophoresis for Salmonella Infection Surveillance, Texas, USA, 2007

To identify sources of transmission for area clusters, in 2007 the Houston Department of Health and Human Services conducted an 8-month study of enhanced surveillance of Salmonella infection. Protocol included patient interviews and linking the results of interviews to clusters of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns detected by the local PulseNet laboratory.

Pulsed-field Gel Electrophoresis for Salmonella Infection

To detect Salmonella clusters, public health laboratories perform pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) that provides a PFGE pattern, or DNA fingerprint. If the PFGE patterns of isolates from >2 persons are indistinguishable, the responsible bacteria may be related to a common source (1–3). PulseNet is a network of public health laboratories coordinated by the Centers for Disease Control and ...

Salmonella enterica Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis Clusters, Minnesota, USA, 2001–2007

We determined characteristics of Salmonella enterica pulsed-field gel electrophoresis clusters that predict their being solved (i.e., that result in identification of a confirmed outbreak). Clusters were investigated by the Minnesota Department of Health by using a dynamic iterative model. During 2001-2007, a total of 43 (12.5%) of 344 clusters were solved. Clusters of ≥4 isolates were more lik...

Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis.

DNA molecules in an agarose matrix elongate and migrate toward the anode when exposed to an electric field. An agarose matrix represents a highly irregular network with pores of various dimensions, large open areas, and regions with different densities. During electrophoresis, migration will be retarded by obstructions that prevent sieving by size and result in "end-on" migration as if through ...

Subtyping of Salmonella enterica isolated from humans and food animals using Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis

Salmonella infections are the second leading cause of zoonotic bacterial foodborne illness. Main source of infection in human is contaminated food products. The aim of this study was sub typing isolates of Salmonella entericaobtained during our previous study byPulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) technique. All 46 Salmonella isolates were serotyped and then subjected to PFGE. Total isolates...
